Early Life

An account of Pralhad Joshi’s origins, education and first steps into public life in north Karnataka. It is built only from official records and attributed reporting, with the regional history that frames them. Where the record is silent, this page says so rather than filling the gap.

Chapter I · Birth

Vijayapura, 1962

The Lok Sabha member record gives his date of birth as 27 November 1962 and his place of birth as Vijayapura, Karnataka. It names his parents as Shri Venkatesh Joshi and Smt. Malatibai.

Vijayapura, long known as Bijapur, lies in the north of the State. It was the seat of the Adil Shahi sultanate, whose monuments, including the Gol Gumbaz, still define the city. The name Vijayapura came into official use in 2014.

Chapter II · Place

The twin cities of Hubballi and Dharwad

His permanent address, according to the official record, is in Hubballi. With neighbouring Dharwad it forms one of Karnataka’s largest urban areas. The Dharwad district administration describes Hubballi as “a commercial and industrial hub” and Dharwad as “an academic and cultural hub”.

The district’s history, as the administration summarises it, runs from early Palaeolithic settlement through the Badami and Kalyani Chalukyas, the Rashtrakutas, Vijayanagara, the Adil Shahis, the Mysore kingdom and the Peshwas. Under British rule Dharwad became a divisional headquarters of educational administration, and Kannada gained prominence there. The area was organised as a single Collectorate, Dharwad District, in 1830.

In 1962, the year of his birth, Hubli and Dharwad were merged to form the Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation. It is today the second-largest municipal corporation in Karnataka after Bengaluru.

Chapter III · Education

College years

The official record states that he was “educated at K.S. Arts College, Hubli and Karnataka University, Dharwad”. It gives his qualification as a Bachelor of Arts. The university’s own name is Karnatak University.

Karnatak University was created by the legislature of the former Bombay Presidency through the Karnatak University Act, 1949, and became a statutory university on 1 March 1950. For students of north Karnataka it was, and remains, the principal public university of the region.

Chapter IV · Work

Civic and business life

His official ministerial profile lists his profession as industrialist; the Lok Sabha data field records him as a businessperson. Hubballi’s role as a commercial centre provides the context.

The same profile lists roles in Hubballi’s civic institutions: Honorary Chairman of the Vijayanagar Education Society, Hubballi, and Board Member of the Karnataka Chamber of Commerce and Industries. The profile does not give the years for these roles, so none are stated here.

His marriage to Smt. Jyoti Joshi on 26 November 1992 is also recorded in the official profile.

Chapter V · Public involvement

Into public life

Press accounts of his early career describe the early 1990s campaign to hoist the national flag at the Idgah Maidan in Hubballi, a ground whose ownership was then being contested in court. The News Minute reported in 2019 that he was among a group that attempted to hoist the flag there on 15 August 1994, defying prohibitory orders. The Tribune wrote in 2024 that Dharwad had become a stronghold of his party after 1994. This page records these reports with attribution and makes no judgement on the events.

His first formal office on record followed: President of the BJP’s Dharwad District unit from 1995 to 1998, then General Secretary of the district unit from 1998 to 2003. In 2004 he contested and won the Dharwad North Lok Sabha seat. The rest of his career is traced on the Public Journey page.
